Calder Aulune is a wizard for hire in a city where magic isn’t just real—it’s a business.

Fixing worn-out wards, restoring forgotten sigils, and binding rogue spirits keeps his bills paid and his wand well-used. But when a dead witch’s familiar ambushes him in an alley and binds him with a deadly curse, Calder’s simple life spirals into darkness.

The witch’s final spell was meant to track down her killer, and now Calder has inherited her vengeance. He has mere days to solve a murder that’s layered in secrecy, unravel spells older and darker than he’s ever encountered, and fend off magical forces that don’t want the truth to come to light.

With each turn, Calder is drawn deeper into a mystery that threatens not only his life but the very fabric of the city’s magical underworld. In a race against time, Calder must decide just how far he’s willing to go for justice… or die trying.

Curse of the Dead Witch is part of the contemporary fantasy series, Spellwright, by Eliot Bishop.

A captivating novelette in a magical world.

A fun story full of interesting magical details following a Wizard and his quest to free himself from a curse by solving a murder.

The characters are unusual and the twists of the story are unpredictable with intriguing surprises.

There's plenty of scope for getting to know the main character and exploring his world more so I look forward to following along on his next adventure in the next book in the series.

The damn seagull had ruined my search.

I left through the back door and spent a couple of seconds reforming the sigils from Eugene’s memory. I made it all the way to the big box store parking lot across the road, when I saw a stag staring at me from a grass-filled lot between buildings. The lot had bits of some ancient convenience store poking out of the scrub-brush.

I sighed and shrugged and headed over to the stag. When I was within a dozen feet, it transformed with the sound of snapping bones and ripping skin.

“Ugh, come on Doug. That’s disgusting and you know it,” I complained.

Detective Douglas Palamondryne stood just short of six feet, in a blue overcoat that fell to his ankles and made him seem only five and a half foot tall. Scraggly gray beard, a long gaunt face, dark brown eyes, and a wide, full-brimmed hat with a flat top, and what looks like a bird’s nest built around the brim of the hat. The hat bobbed up and down as he looked me over.

“Nice night for a walk?” he asked me pointedly.

“Yeah, love that freshly unboxed electronics smell from the store, you know? That molded plastic smell from when you were a kid and just bought a new game, cracked the cover and took a deep whiff? Mmmm… brings me back, just standing here.”

“Cut the shit, Calder.”
