From Ice Castles to Root Beer Factories
You may think you know what fantasy romance is. There has been enormous chatter about fantasy romance in the last few years. Everyone wants to read it. Everyone seems to be writing it. “Romantasy,” as it has been dubbed (a sobriquet I resist with every fiber of my being) is Romance + Fantasy. Very simple.
But is it?
I thought I understood fantasy romance until I came to edit this year’s edition of Christmas Romance Digest. The seven novelettes in this edition span the deep and wide range of fantasy, from ice castles to root beer factories, with styles from dreamy urban fantasy to feisty contemporary fantasy, to softly romantic tales and whimsical dreams.
But all of them are, at their heart, romances entwined with the holidays, with Christmas, Hanukkah or the solstice helping bring lovers together.
