What does one do in the face of a relentless enemy?

Fight or flight is one of our most primal instincts, a leftover from primitive days. It cannot be denied. In the backwater colonies on the fringes of outer space, it is one of our most valuable skills.

Ptolemy Lane. Sergeant Fisher. The Dagger. Senior Chief Jack Palahniuk. Jedidiah Kramer. Captain Hedge. Six heroes face that choice.

Fight or flight.

“The Captain Who Broke the Rules” by Cameron Cooper
“Stranded” by Benjamin Cooper
“Dagger” by David A. Gray
“Plankholder” by Blaze Ward
“The Sentry” by Clayton Scott
“Talionis” by Eliot Bishop

Six stories. Six relentless enemies and six epic heroes. What will they do? How will they survive?

Stories Rule Press was formed out of the global pandemic of 2020. It had always been my wife’s and my plan to get our writing income to the point where it could support us without the need of the dreaded day job. She had been writing full time for five years and when the layoffs and the lockdowns and the severance pay came in March of 2020, we just decided to go for it.

It was a huge adjustment at first, especially in mindset. I remember conversations where we both had to remind ourselves, “This is our job now. This is what we do.” It’s taken a long time. As I write this in early January of 2021, I think we’ve finally got it all worked out.

One of the things that is key for me in any work that I do is helping others. I knew very early on during the planning of the Stories Rule Press agenda that I would be editing a series of anthologies. Although I don’t claim to be able to make someone’s career, I do hope that, in some small measure, I can have a hand in their success.

Space Opera Digest 2021 is the first of what I hope are many anthologies from Stories Rule Press. It’s been an interesting experience putting it together. Again, it’s all about mindset. A lot of the time, I’ve felt like I was guessing at what needed to be done. I’ve had to trust that whatever choices I made were in the best interest of not only Stories Rule Press but the authors, as well. In the end, I think we’ve come up with a damn good set of stories from some exceptional writers. I’m proud to put them together under the Stories Rule Press name for your enjoyment and entertainment.

The only guidance I gave authors for a submission to the anthology was that it had to be space opera and a relentless enemy. I wanted them to feel as free as possible to be creative and come up with their best possible story. I’ve picked the six best out of all the stories submitted.

Here, for the first time, Stories Rule Press presents Space Opera Digest 2021: Fight or Flight.

Enjoy
