How Long is a “Short Read”
Short Story (SS)
A short story delivers a complete adventure in a very compact form — perfect when you want a quick escape without committing to a longer book.
Typical length: under 7,500 words Reading time: about 10–30 minutes
Novelette (Nt)
A novelette has more room to develop characters and plot than a short story, while still being quick to read in a single sitting.
Typical length: 7,500–17,500 words Reading time: about 30–90 minutes
Novella (Nv)
Novellas sit between short fiction and full novels. They offer a richer story experience but can still be finished in an evening.
Typical length: 17,500–43,000 words. Reading time: about 1.5–3 hours
Novel (N)
A novel is a full-length book with deeper worldbuilding, complex plots, and a longer reading experience.
Typical length: 43,000+ words. Reading time: several hours to multiple reading sessions.
